Learn what clipper guard numbers mean, how lever position and cutting direction change the result, and how to ask your barber for a repeatable haircut.

“Give me a number two” sounds like a complete haircut request because it contains a measurement. It is actually one instruction inside a larger design. A guard comb holds the clipper blade a set distance from the scalp, limiting how short the hair can be cut during that pass. On the common Wahl and Andis scale, a #1 corresponds to roughly 1/8 inch or 3 millimeters, a #2 to 1/4 inch or 6 millimeters, a #3 to 3/8 inch or about 10 millimeters, and a #4 to 1/2 inch or 13 millimeters. Higher numbers leave progressively more hair. Those figures are useful reference points, but even Andis labels its comparison chart as approximate rather than a promise of a perfectly identical result on every head or tool setup.

The first variable is the adjustable lever. Moving it changes the relationship between the moving and stationary blades, creating lengths between the main guard sizes. Wahl’s consumer guidance describes the closed position as the shorter setting and the open position as longer, with approximately 1/16 inch of adjustment on the clippers covered by that system. The exact range depends on the blade and clipper, so “#2 open” should not be treated as an international unit of measurement. In practice, the lever is what allows a barber to erase a visible step between two guards rather than building a fade from a small set of fixed shelves.

Cutting direction creates another difference. Clipping against hair growth lifts and feeds more strands into the guard teeth, which usually produces a closer and more uniform version of that guard length. Moving with the growth pattern may allow some strands to lie beneath the teeth, leaving more hair and a softer result. Neither direction is automatically wrong. A barber may use both to control weight, preserve a wave pattern, or approach a cowlick without exposing too much scalp. This is why the sound of “a #2” does not reveal the actual technique used to create the finished surface.

The head supplies the remaining variables. Dense hair can look dark and full at a length that appears nearly bare on fine or lower-density hair. Tightly curved hair may rise away from the scalp and present a different silhouette than straight hair cut to the same measured length. Strand diameter, scalp-to-hair contrast, head shape, growth direction, and the height at which the barber places the shorter section all change what the eye reads. A #2 used low around the temple is not the same design as a #2 carried to the parietal ridge, even if the individual hairs in those areas are similar in length.

The better consultation combines measurement with architecture. Say where you want the guard used, where the transition should sit, and which areas need to remain full. A useful request might be: “Use a #2 around the lower sides, keep weight near the temple, and show me how high the transition will go.” If you like the result, photograph the front, both sides, and back after the cut settles, then record any known guard and lever details in your phone. The guard number gives the next barber a starting point. The photographs and placement language explain the haircut you are actually trying to repeat.
