The restoration is reason enough to go, but the more interesting reason is that the world has spent the last three decades catching up to the movie.
The date 2029 once sounded comfortably futuristic.
Ghost in the Shell imagines a society where computer networks have become inseparable from ordinary life, cybercrime is commonplace, bodies can be technologically modified, memories can be manipulated and the line between human consciousness and artificial intelligence has become difficult to define.
Its central character, Major Motoko Kusanagi, is a full-body cyborg working with Public Security Section 9. Her investigation eventually leads to the Puppet Master, a mysterious hacker capable of entering human minds and altering memories.
On paper, it is a police thriller.
Underneath that, Oshii is asking something much larger:
If your body can be replaced, your memories altered and your mind connected to a network, what exactly makes you, you?
In 1995, that was speculative philosophy, but here nn 2026, we are putting pieces of the question into production.
