For thousands of years, the tattooing process has remained largely unchanged. A needle punctures the skin, deposits ink, and repeats the process thousands of times.

CipherX believes there's another way.

The London-based startup has introduced Microdot, a tattoo technology that replaces the traditional tattoo machine with a disposable patch embedded with microscopic, biodegradable needles. Applied in under 15 minutes, the patch deposits pigment into the skin with minimal discomfort, no buzzing machine, and little to no aftercare.

The concept isn't about replacing tattoo artists. At least, not yet.

Instead, CipherX is targeting a different audience: people who've always wanted a small, permanent tattoo but have been discouraged by the pain, noise, or commitment of a traditional studio experience. The current catalog is intentionally limited to minimalist black designs measuring up to 15 millimeters, with plans to expand into larger formats, additional colors, and even at-home application kits.

For collectors seeking large-scale custom work, the traditional tattoo machine isn't going anywhere. But for first-time clients, minimalist designs, or anyone hesitant to sit through hours under a needle, Microdot offers a glimpse at how technology could broaden access to an art form that has remained remarkably unchanged for generations.
