Instead of searching for the perfect shampoo, it may be more useful to think about building a regimen.

Step One: Start With Your Scalp

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp.

If your scalp feels dry, itchy, flaky, or oily by the end of the day, your cleanser may be working against you. Look for shampoos that clean effectively without leaving your hair feeling stripped.

Ingredients like aloe vera, tea tree oil, peppermint, jojoba oil, and amino acids can help maintain balance while preserving your scalp's natural moisture barrier.

The goal isn't squeaky-clean hair.

It's a scalp that feels comfortable between washes.

Step Two: Replace What You Remove

Even a gentle shampoo removes oils.

Conditioner exists to restore some of that moisture and improve manageability.

For short hair, this step can feel unnecessary until you stop using it and notice the difference. Softer texture, reduced frizz, and improved elasticity become increasingly important as hair grows longer or becomes more prone to dryness.

Not everyone needs a serum, mask, or scalp treatment.

But if you're experiencing shedding, excessive dryness, irritation, or damage from styling, targeted products can help.

A scalp serum used a few times a week may support healthier skin at the follicle level. A conditioning mask once every week or two can restore softness to dry or chemically treated hair.

Think of treatments as tools.

Use them when you have a reason to, not because they're trending.

Step Four: Style Without Fighting Your Hair

The best styling product is usually the one that works with your natural texture.

Styling creams provide definition with a softer finish.

Clay-based products offer texture and hold while maintaining a matte appearance.

If your hair feels stiff, greasy, or difficult to wash out, the product may be overpowering what your hair wants to do naturally.

A routine doesn't need ten products.

For most men, four is enough:

2–3x per week

After every wash

Daily
• Texture spray, styling cream, or clay suited to your hair type

Haircare doesn't need to be complicated. The best routines are often the ones that remain consistent.
