Creating A Luxury Durag
Designer Ren Jett has dropped a luxury line of Durags, aptly named DÜ.
The Durag is an essential element in the viable path for any Black man pursuing the honorable formation of a sea-like hairstyle, generally called "waves". Durag's have been around for generations, a cultural staple that has been categorized by many as ghetto, unsavory, and unprofessional- like many other things pertaining to Black culture. But alas, the Durag has survived. The DÜ site takes on this negative connotation that have been ascribed to Durags, saying:
"Although commonly thought as a stigma of lower class dress, DÜ embraces the durags' quintessential history of cultural identity and independence by offering a luxurious line of hand-crafted silk and lace pieces adorned with provocative art to both elevate perception and transform historic denigration into stylistic exclusivity. "
ASAP Ferg made some noise as he dropped his latest album, Still Striving, in 2017 donning a turquoise Durag. Could it be that wearing Durags publicly are rising in popularity again? Seems so. Could it be that because we're living in a time and space filled with 90s nostalgia, this is just a trend? Who knows.
What we do know is that we applaud a young black person pushing culture and challenging the status quo. Vogue (Yes, that Vogue) has already published an article about the brand and the celebration of this cultural item, and as far as we can see the site is sold out. Keep your eyes on this brand.
