Kobe Bryant Launches New Grooming Line

Art of Sport is a men’s grooming line consisting of deodorant, a 2-in-1 body and hair wash, bar soap, and sunscreen geared towards athletes. Matthias Metternich, the entrepreneur behind the brand, was put in connection with Bryant through a mutual contact and from there the ball began rolling.

Alongside Kobe Bryant are other notable athletes - James Harden of The Houston Rockets, Pittsburgh Steelers Juju Smith-Schuster, Javier Baez of the Chicago Cubs, and several other professional athletes from the worlds of surfing and motocross are also involved, and helped test the product.

According to Metternich, the products went through a development process of about 500 or 600 iterations each. Athlete’s played a huge role, as their feedback was used at each step of the way. Art of Sport is grounded on the idea that sports-based grooming products are always more about marketing than performance. The authenticity of the brand is their anchor.

Bryant told Sports Illustrated that even though his playing days are over, he still hits the gym every day at 4 a.m. But these days, he does so while smelling like “citrus, green pear and hints of spring leaves”—the scent notes of Bryant’s favorite deodorant from the new line dubbed “Compete.” “The number of phone calls I’ve had from Kobe to say that he’s out of deodorant and to send him more is just shocking to me,” Metternich told SI.

Art Of Sport is just one of many ventures Kobe has tapped into post-retirement, and he is unwaveringly committed to making the rest of legacy better than the first part.
