Watch: NPR's Tiny Desk Welcomes August Greene (Common & Robert Glasper)
August Greene, the collaborative effort between Common, Robert Glasper, and Karriem Riggins visited NPR’s tiny desk to perform a handful of song from their debut album. The project is evidence that Common hasn’t lost the passion for the craft, as his lyrics are as potent as ever. Clever rhyme schemes flow over Robert Glasper’s keys, and the honesty/vulnerability of the lyrics stick with you in a way that a lot of music doesn’t nowadays. For any true hip-hop fan its sure to be an album you can visit again and again.
The group came into fruition in 2016 at the White House as Tiny Desk put on a special concert in which they performed “Letter To The Free,” an original song for Ava Duvernay’s Netflix documentary 13th. The song eventually went on to win an Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.
