Chance The Rapper Purchases Chicago News Site
Chance The Rapper is having quite the week. He's dropped (4) new songs, recently announced a joint album with Kanye West, and according to the lyrics in his song "I Might Need Security" he's puchased the Chicagoist, a local Chicago news site.
“I’m extremely excited to be continuing the work of the Chicagoist, an integral local platform for Chicago news, events and entertainment,” said Chance in a statement. “WNYC’s commitment to finding homes for the ‘ist’ brands, including Chicagoist, was an essential part of continuing the legacy and integrity of the site. I look forward to re-launching it and bringing the people of Chicago an independent media outlet focused on amplifying diverse voices and content.”
Chance is no stranger to utilizing his platform to enact change. In 2017, when he met with Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner to speak about Chicago Public Schools, the meetings and phone calls ended up flopping. Chance then announced that he would be using money from his ticket sales to donate $1 million to Chicago Public Schools. Stand-up guy tings. He hosts open mic events for Chicago high schoolers, he's made an arts and literacy fund. This weekend, he’ll host a concert celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Special Olympics.
This is important because anyone who knows the role of media in society understands that they can not only inform, but influence public opinion. Chance's track record appears benevolent, so we're excited to see how he will utilize this re-launching to push for social change and empowerment of marginalized communities.
